Treating “Panda Eyes” My Way…

I’ve previously written on the treatment of periorbital dark circles (commonly referred to as panda or racoon eyes) and have highlighted the possible causes for this phenomenon: increased pigmentation, thinness of the skin, volume loss leading to shadowing and circulatory congestion.

I reviewed a patient recently who’s been delighted by her results leading up to her wedding day. Her problem with dark circles started in childhood when a skin condition (possibly eczema) led to the development of prominent hyperpigmentation of the area. With age, self consciousness and heavy use of makeup to camouflage the area set in. Continual use of heavy makeup led to chronic irritation and eye rubbing, triggering further pigmentary changes.

When I first met her, in addition to the hyperpigmentation, the skin over her periorbital area was thin and crepey and she has also had some volume loss around her eye sockets and upper face.

Her management plan consisted of the use of skin products (with Vitamin A and Hydroquinone) and skin treatments (hydrafacials and Environ facials) to improve skin health and reduce pigmentation, dermal fillers to correct volume loss and stimulate collagen production and a course of CO2 laser treatment. (Madonna lift) to resurface and thicken the skin.

Dark periorbital circles are challenging to treat because there are multiple factors in play. An effective treatment plan needs a team approach, using a variety of expertise and skill sets.
