What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty (also known as nose job) is an operation that alters the structure of the nose. This can be done for functional and/or cosmetic reasons.
A functional rhinoplasty often requires addressing the septum as well (ie septoplasty) and as a result the operation is often called septorhinoplasty.

Rhinoplasty can be approached through a closed approach (also known as endonasal approach) or open approach (also known as external approach). The open approach requires an incision on the skin between the nostrils to open the nose up and that would leave a small scar; this scar is often not noticeable when fully healed.
How long does rhinoplasty surgery take?
The length of the procedure depends on the complexity of each individual case, but on average rhinoplasty can take between 2-3 hours.
What are the risks and complications associated with rhinoplasty?
The risks can be divided into the general risks of any surgery (such as risk of anaesthesia, bleeding and infection) and risks specifically for the nasal operation.
The most common risk of rhinoplasty is the risk of residual blockage and deformity. There is also risk of residual asymmetry, irregularity, deformity as well as runny nose and dry nose.
There is also a chance of septal perforation (ie a hole on the middle partition of the nose which could happen when septoplasty is performed).
Patients who undergo open rhinoplasty will notice some numbness of the nasal tip. The numbness often settles down with time but it might take several months.
Can rhinoplasty correct breathing problems?
Yes, nasal blockage can be addressed at the same time as a rhinoplasty by including surgery on the nasal valve area, septum or turbinates. Combination of septoplasty and rhinoplasty is called septorhinoplasty.
How much does rhinoplasty cost?
The fees for rhinoplasty vary for each case and the extent of the surgery being performed. The exact figure will be calculated after you have been seen and assesssed by the surgeon. Typically, operations limited to the nasal tup (i.e. tip rhinoplasty) are less expensive compared to procedures that address the whole nose. Secondary rhinoplasty cases (when a patient’s nose has been operated on before by a different surgeon) are often more expensive than primary rhinoplasty cases (where no previous surgery has been performed). A guide price can be found on our fees page.
What is the recovery time for rhinoplasty?
The recovery time for rhinoplasty varies from person to person, and is affect by the extent of the surgery performed. As a general rule, most people take 1-2 weeks off work. Operation on the septum or turbinates can result in further swelling and congestion inside of the nose.
You will have an external cast on your nose that will be removed approximately 7 days after surgery. Nasal congestion, bruising and swelling often take 1-2 weeks to improve. Most people return to normal activity after 2 weeks. Heavy exercise or other strenous activities is best to be delayed slightly longer.
What is the ideal age for getting a rhinoplasty?
Ideally, rhinoplasty should not be performed on a nose that is still growing. Nasal growth finishes around the ages of 16-18, but patients must be over the age of 18 to have elective surgery at our clinic.
Can rhinoplasty fix a deviated septum?
Septal surgery (i.e. septoplasty) can be performed at the same time as a rhinoplasty to fix a deviated septum. This combined procedure is called septorhinoplasty.
Are the any non-surgical alternatives to rhinoplasty?
Non-surgical rhinoplasty involves the use of fillers to alter the shape of the nose. Fillers are used to fill the gaps and troughs on the nose in order to create an illusion of overall change. This is done by actually making the nose larger in certain places in order to make the nose appear more balanced.
What is the difference between open and closed rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty can be approached through a closed approach (also known as an endonasal approach) or an open or external approach. The open approach requires an incision on the skin between the nostrils to open the nose up and that would leave a small scar; this scar is often not noticeable when fully healed. The particular approach depends on surgeon’s preference and the extent of surgery. Open approach makes the access to inner structures easier for more complex procedures.
Can rhinoplasty change the shape of the nostrils?
The shape of the nostrils can change to some degree when the overall shape of the nose is altered. Dedicated surgery to address the nostrils (also known as alar base surgery) can also be performed to change the nostril shape. Nostril surgery often requires incisions on the side of the nasal skin and often involves removing a piece of skin.
Will rhinoplasty leave visible scars?
Most of the incisions performed during rhinoplasty and the resultant scars are inside the nose so they are not visible. Open rhinoplasty, however, will leave a short scar on the piece of skin between the nostrils. If nostril surgery has been performed, there will be scars on the side of the nose, also. Generally, the scars are placed strategically in order to hide them in the normals creases and shadows of the nose. Although the scars will not disappear entirely, they are often not noticeable when the wound has been sutured properly and the wound has fully healed.
Can rhinoplasty improve facial symmetry?
Rhinoplasty itself cannot correct facial asymmetry. However, certain rhinoplasty procedures may alter the perception of facial asymmetry. More importantly, facial asymmetry can affect the final result of rhinoplasty. In certain asymmetric faces, the anatomy will make it almost impossible to have the nose straight. There are certain techniques that can be employed in these situations in order to reduce the perception of nasal deformity.
How long do the results of rhinoplasty last?
Rhinoplasty results are long lasting, although ageing will continue to affect the face and nose. Rhinoplasty is an operation that can actually improve the appearance of the ageing nose.
Can rhinoplasty correct a drooping or bulbous tip?
Yes, a drooping or bulbous tip are some of the common nasal deformities that patients seek correction through rhinoplasty.
What is the difference between cosmetic and functional rhinoplasty?
Functiona. rhinoplasty, as the name implies, is aimed at improving the nasal airway, whereas cosmetic rhinoplasty aims to improve the nasal shape. In most cases, function and shape go hand in hand, but there are some situations where an operation can adversly affect function or form and the surgeon can advise the patient accordingly.
Can rhinoplasty be combined with other procedures?
Septal surgery and turbinate surgery can be combined with rhinoplasty. Other procedures may also be combined but this would be at the discretion of the operating surgeon(s) taking into the account multiple factors. It is best to discuss this with your surgeon when you attend for the consultation.
How can I choose the right rhinoplasty surgeon?
Patients should look for a surgeon who is dedicated to rhinoplasty and performs both functional and cosmetic rhinoplasty. A surgeon who has been formally trained and accredited in one of the related disciplines such as plastic surgery, ENT or maxillofacial surgery is a good starting point, but is not enough to make a fully informed decision. Patients should look for a surgeons sub-specialist interest and check for unbiased feedback that may be found on the internet or dedicated websites. The most important aspect is what the patient gets out of the consultation, and whether they fell that the surgeon understood their concerns and provided a sensible plan of action. It is also important to know who would be looking after you if things do not go as planned.
What should I expect during the initial consultation for rhinoplasty?
The initial consultation is the time for the patients to express their wishes and for the surgeon to take a full history and to perform a full examination. Photographs are also taken and the plan of surgery and the risks are explained and discussed.
It is advisable to think about what was said during the initial consultation and attend a second follow-up consultation for any queries to be answered before deciding to go ahead with surgery.
How long does it take to see the final result of rhinoplasty surgery?
The initial swelling takes a few weeks to settle down but some residual swelling can take several months to subside fully. It takes about a year before the final result can be fully appreciated.
