One Day in the Life of a Cosmetic Nurse

Guest blogger: Natasha Rankin, Clinical Nurse Specialist.

“My work at CC Kat Aesthetics can only be described as varied (and interesting)

One of my main duties is looking after our day surgery facility. As a theatre sister in my previous life, I see our minor OT as my baby. It is a fairly formidable responsibility as we carry a wide range of treatments in there, from simple excision of lumps and bumps to more involved surgery like VASER liposuction/body sculpturing and facelifts. On theatre days, I scrub up to assist Mrs Kat in surgery. Kelly, our skin therapist, is also an important part of the theatre team which I will tell you more in a seperate blog.

Today is not a theatre day and I will be starting off my day with an anti-wrinkle injection treatment for a regular patient who has been seeing me for the past two years. We have found that the injections are lasting longer with regular treatment and the last time I saw her was five months ago.

Next up would be a followup patient who had fillers with me two weeks back. In addition to filling her nasolabial folds, I have also injected her with a filler to restore the loss of volume in her cheeks. I think it is unlikely that she will need any additional treatment today, from what I remember of her results.

A Obagi Blue Peel follows for a patient I have been seeing in the last couple of months. she has come to us with the common problem of Melasma and we have been preparing her skin with the Obagi starter pack. We have already seen a improvement in her pigmentation and the peel should further improve on that.

Lunch would be eaten as I read my emails. Hard to beat home made soup in the winter months.

The afternoon will see me carrying out Laser Hair Removal on two patients. The Soprano XL is a good laser; the treatment is fairly comfortable for the patients and I get a good work at the same time. I do however share the Soprano with Kelly and Annie, our skin therapists who have their own hair removal lists.

My final patient for today is someone referred by Dr Kat for Sclerotherapy of her leg veins. I shall be injecting those veins, which are too big for our VBeam laser, with sclerosant which will hopefully cause those vessells to break down and disperse.

It is unlikely that I will finish at 5pm today as I need to run through my stock check to ensure that the theatre (my baby, remember?) is fully stocked and operational and that we have enough fillers and toxins for the next two weeks.

Yes, it makes for a long and tiring day but i will be back for more tomorrow.”
