MMA fighters turn to Plastic Surgeons

Interesting article on Wired about MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) fighters turning to plastic surgery to improve the quality of their facial scars.

The method described uses fresh cadaveric skin ( skin removed from a fresh dead body) to reinforce the scar revision. Cadaveric skin is not freely available in the UK and is largely reserved for treating severe burns.

Other alternatives are synthetic and cultured skin. More recently, denaturalised porcine (pig) skin have also become available. The major stumbling block for all these alternatives is the cost involved but this may be less of a issue for the well paid fighters.

Other modalities of scar improvement are – Vitamin A/E/C oil, silicone gel sheets, pressure garments, steroid injections, needling and laser skin resurfacing.
