Combat Your Pigmentation

Unwanted pigmentation is a common problem (desirable pigmentation, as in developing a tanned complexion, can also become problematic but that is a topic for another day). Cosmetically, the main effect of pigmentary changes is that they disrupt the tone of the skin, taking away the evenness and transparency which are associated with healthy and youthful complexion.

The skin derives it’s colour primarily from melanin (or the lack of), a pigment produced by the pigment cells melanocytes. Localised increase levels of melanin results in pigmentary changes. Common triggers for overproduction of melanin include UV exposure, ageing, injury/inflammation and hormonal changes.

In considering possible treatments for hyper pigmentation, many people immediately think of lasers and peels. In fact, specialist skincare products, cosmeceuticals, can achieve impressive results when used in the right combination.

Below are the before and after images of a patient treated with hydroquinone, a de-pigmenting agent, in combination with retinol based products. In her case, it worked out to be a very worthwhile trial before scheduling her for laser treatment.
