BAAPS Annual Scientific Meeting 2014

Here I am in cool London attending the first of the 2 day meeting. Not a great start, as I waited 1 hour at Euston Station for a taxi and missed the first lecture on how to avoid facial nerve damage by the wonderful Dr James Stuzin from Miami, Florida, who was once the President of theAmerican Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.

The second lecture was by Dr A Verpaele from Belgium on polyurethane coated silicone gel breast implants. I have used polyurethane breast implants almost exclusively since 2010 so I was delighted to hear an extremely highly regarded Plastic Surgeon sharing the same views about it’s advantages – low capsular contracture and re-operation rates.

The third lecture was by Dr Patrick Maxwell, clinical Professor of Plastic Surgery from California who many would regard as one of the greatest pioneering breast surgeons in the world. He demonstrated amazing results after correcting some extreme examples of breasts crippled by capsular contracture. His secret – use of acellular dermal matrix (denatured pig skin where the cells have been removed and the inert collagen framework act as a scaffold over the implants where the patient’s own cells will then populate). My favourite lecture of the day.

There followed an entertaining trio of lectures about how to protect our practice and reputation both in life and on the net. We were than greatly entertained by Mr Dai Davies who I briefly trained under for my aesthetic fellowship. Mr Davies gave us a summary of the beginnings of BAAPS when it was called BAPS. But more importantly, it was a tribute to the late Mr Mike Hackett, one of the founding Plastic Surgeons of BAAPS, a teacher and a great lover of life.

The final keynote lecture was again by Dr P. Maxwell when he shared with us his 30 year personal journey in breast aesthetics. He is one of the most innovative Plastic Surgeon of our times who has devoted much of his efforts towards the improvement of women’s health.

The talk reminded us that he was the first surgeon to do a free Latissimus Dorsi flap, first to suggest texturing of expander implants, first to develope the concept of bio-dimentional breast augmentation, first to describe the bioengineered breast, amongst many other firsts.

His immense experience in breast reconstruction and constant dialogue with patients have shown him that patients prefer less invasive and less traumatic forms of breast reconstruction hence his pioneering work in developing the bio-engineered breast – a combination of form stable cohesive gel breast implants, regenerative elements of scaffolding provided by accelular dermal matrices (eg Strattice) and fat grafting.

He shared with us his philosophy as a Plastic Surgeon – that we must all take responsibility for our thoughts and ultimately our actions.

It was on this inspiring note that we ended the day.

I then spent a wonderful evening with hubby at the famous Gordon Ramsay Restaurant in Chelsea, worth every one of it’s twinkling 3 stars.
