Hyperpigmentation is a common condition where patches of skin become darker in colour than the normal surrounding skin. This darkening occurs when an excess of melanin forms in the skin (the brown pigment that produces normal skin colour). This results in freckles, sun spots, age spots, under eye dark circles and melasma.

There are various causes of hyperpigmentation from over exposure to the sun, picking at the skin or certain medications such as antibiotics, hormone treatments & anti-seizure drugs.
